Also known as the hibiscus plant, it boasts a heavenly fruited dry fragrance with floral sweetness. The wet aroma is sweet like honey with notes of fresh ginger.
Jerk Fusion’s native home the parish of Portland in Jamaica produces some of the most exotic hibiscus plants in the Caribbean. Having one of the most distinctive flavours we’ve found.
When fermented the syrupy pulpiness produces a sweet, full-bodied, distinctive and irresistible taste, with a slight fizz produced by the fermenting process.
The Jamaican Sorrel flower has a number of Benefits
Weight loss
Studies have suggested that there is an acid in sorrel that helps with weight loss. Amylase is an enzyme that breaks down starch and sugar (calories) molecules in food small enough to digest. The more calories equal more weight gain. This acid found in sorrel inhibits the discharge of amylase into the digestive system.
Anti- cancer
Sorrel is found to have high doses of vitamin C, a great antioxidant, which helps to prevent cancer and help in the cure of the disease. Anthocyanin properties are also found in sorrel, which are known to inhibit the development of cancer.
Anti – inflammatory
Studies have shown sorrel to have powerful ant-inflammatory properties. Neutralising conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, stomach, and cancer as mentioned above.
High blood pressure
Sorrel has antihypertensive properties that help to lower blood pressure. Research done at a university in Boston, found that by drinking a cup of sorrel tea daily, some individuals who were suffering from high blood pressure had a ten-point reduction in their blood pressure level after 30 days.
Liver disease
According to studies the antioxidant properties in sorrel may also help in treating liver damage. Alcohol can cause liver damage so it is irony that in Jamaica we put white rum in our sorrel drink during the festive season. Sorrel is known to prevent and cure hangover, so you can drink as much sorrel and alcohol mix without the worry of feeling so terrible the next day.
Lower cholesterol levels
Sorrel helps to keep the heart healthy and prevents the development of cardiovascular disease. The powerful antioxidant properties in the sorrel reduce the low density lipoproteins (bad cholesterols) in the body, which develop into heart disease.
Prevent the flu, cold and cough
Sorrel is an ancient African remedy for cold and flu. Sorrel was Ethiopian long before it was Jamaican, and to this day sorrel is used to cure the cold and flu in Ethiopia. Rich in vitamin C, sorrel helps boost the immune system and prevents you getting a cold or flu.
Relief fever
Because of the ability to cool the body down, sorrel is used to reduce the effect fever.
For menstrual cycle
Drinking sorrel tea a few days before your period can ease menstruation cramps. Extracts from the leaves are used to regulate menstrual cycle and treat menstrual cycle related problems.
Constipation
Sorrel contains diuretic properties that increase bowel movement, which in turn relief constipation. This is a remedy that has long been used among the Ancient Egyptians.
